If you’re looking for some unique specialty pies, a visit to Saluggi’s Pizza on 325 Church Street is your answer. While the casual venue carries tasty slices of plain cheese pizza, meat lovers may want to sample their Italian Deli pie, which, just like the sandwich for which it’s named, comprises ham, salami and provolone, plus caramelized onions over a marinara sauce. The more adventurous veggie lovers may want a slice of the brussel sprout pizza with yes, roasted brussel sprouts, complemented by crispy bacon, caramelized onion and mozzarella. For a taste of gorgonzola, mozzarella and a mix of walnuts and onions, try their Blue pizza.

Of course, as with most Italian eateries, Saluggi’s serves up more than just pizza. The eggplant rollatini and shrimp parmesan entrees hit the spot.

Fleet Week is held in New York City to honor the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Saluggi’s Pizza now offers catering for private and corporate events – whether you’re throwing it at our restaurant (we love parties!) or at your home or office. And we don’t just offer our pizzas, either (although they are our claim to fame). We also cater trays of salads, mini meatballs, chicken wings and even fried calamari for starters, and for mains, pastas such as our baked ziti, linguine with clams, scampi, and spaghetti with meatballs among others.

The prices are right, too, starting at $20 for 1/2 a tray of salad, and with pastas/entrees starting at $40. There’s excessive (borderline comical) debate over who makes the best pizza in New York. Even at our very own newsdesk, casual lunchtime discussion over which pizzeria sells the best slice oft turns into a fiery dispute between pizza lovers vehemently defending their slice of choice. Is it Motorino? Lombardi’s? Grimaldi’s? John’s?

Whatever. We’re not opening that can of worms with this article by throwing around the word “best” (although, if you’re interested in what makes the cut, click here). Sometimes, you just need a suggestion for where to get a solid slice of pizza that’s tasty, fresh, cheesy, reasonably-priced and hits the spot. And for us here at 285 West Broadway, that’s Saluggi’s.

There is hardly a week that goes by without us feasting on a slice or three of Saluggi’s pizza, sometimes even together (I believe we even christened Friday “Saluggi’s Friday” in the summer of 2010). And it’s not just because they’re conveniently around the corner from our office in TriBeCa. It’s because they make damn good pizza.

Their plain slice is an absolute winner (nothing beats that smoky taste of a brick-oven pie), and Saluggi’s make their own mozzarella cheese in-house so the flavors are exquisitely, extraordinarily fresh and pronounced despite the bare simplicity of the ingredients… basically dough, tomato sauce and cheese. The sauce is tangy, the crust is thin, the cheese creamy and delightfully chewy. For good measure they throw a fresh basil leaf or two atop the slice, infusing it with fragrant, almost peppery herb goodness though it’s barely necessary. And for TriBeCa standards, their slices are affordable ($3 a slice). I suggest that you take advantage of their lunch special – $6.50 for two slices and a can of soda. Trust me when I say that you can’t score lunch this delicious for this cheap anywhere in TriBeCa.

If you want to play with the big boys though, you’ve got to get down on a slice of sausage and pepperoni (slightly pricier at $4.25 a slice). I’m a huge sucker for this slice; basically their plain cheese loaded (and that’s an understatement) with layers of spicy pep and tasty, succulent, crumbly sausage practically falling off the dough. It’s pretty much phenomenal. And that’s all I have to say about this slice.

All in all, Saluggi’s is a solid choice for some high-quality, fresh pizza at the right price. Best in New York? Who knows? Who cares? All I know is that you’ll find me and my colleagues there this Friday. And next Friday. And the one after that. Buon appetito!

People might be surprised to know that we have a lot of children’s parties at Saluggi’s…and we love kids! Here are a few ideas for your next kid’s party.  And don’t forget to call Saluggi’s to book your party or plan your catering at 212 226-7900.

• Streamers – Purchase streamers in two or three bright colors that coordinate with your other partyware. Twist the strands of streamers together, and hang the twists along the walls of the party area. You can also wrap streamers around banisters, twist them around floor lamps, use them to create curtains across the doorways leading into the main party area, or create a canopy over the party table. To do the latter, attach the streamers to a chandelier or a central point on the ceiling, and then cascade them out to the sides of the room.
• Balloons – Tie brightly-colored balloons in bunches of three, and attach the bunches to the backs of chairs or to balloon weights.
• Centerpieces – Buy or create a table centerpiece that coordinates with your theme, set it on the party table, and surround it with a sprinkling of confetti. You can make a centerpiece using materials like construction paper-covered shoeboxes, poster board, theme-related toys, hats, and other objects. For example, you could create a treasure chest for an ocean or pirate party by covering a cardboard box with brown paper and strips of gold foil, filling the box with plastic beads and gold coins, and sprinkling a few chocolate coins around the box for your guests to enjoy later.
• Placemats – Set coloring book pages on the party table in place of placemats. Let your guests color their placemats as an icebreaker activity. Laminate the colored placemats using contact paper, and then send them home with your guests as a fun keepsake. Alternatively, you can purchase one of our fun personalized placemats for each of your guests.
• Banners – Hang a birthday banner at the entrance to the party area to welcome your guests and announce your celebration.
• Party Favors – If you plan to give favor bags or boxes to your guests at the end of the party, cluster them on a table with a themed centerpiece, a stuffed animal, or a weighted bunch of balloons at the center to turn your favors into a decoration.
